Norwegian Wood

So I have found a scene in the Japanese film 'Norwegian Wood' that may lend itself well to the practical side of my project.

The scene occurs at 1:48:52 un5il 1:51:54

In the clip we see the main character (male) walking into the foyer of a building, he walks up the stairs with his head down at all times lending to the belief that the character is sad/moody or angry. The males slows down before stopping, at this point the camera doesn't show us why but we believe there to be a character standing before him and it is revealed, a girl, standing infront of his door. They walk into the apartment. barely glancing at one another and face away from each other in the main room. She sits alone at his table as he showers. The male character then dries himself before they both eat dinner quietly, not saying a single word to each other.

So what could this mean in terms of my experiment?

Idea 1.
- The male character is sad/heartbroken/lonely, he hangs his head as he may never feel the way he did before he lost his love again.
- As he slows to a halt at the door there is a sudden realisation, what he sees infront of him makes his life seem that little bit less depressing as there stands that one girl, the one he thought was lost.
- They walk into his apartment together speechless in the shock of her turning up at his doorstep
- As he showers he cleans his previous doubts and fears
- They sit at the table in complete silence, acknowledging their love for each other. This time they are back together for good and is the beginning of the rest of their lives.

Idea 2.
- The character has an air of indifference as he walks up the stairs. Mystery surrounds the character but there is no connotations of threat surrounding him.
- As he comes to a halt there is a panic, what is infront of him and why has it put the character on edge?
- We see the girl, the girl that he was not expecting to see. How did she get here? She was meant to be gone, forever.
- Awkwardly they move into the apartment together. The music here will confuse the audience as it weaves between the harmony once felt between the two characters and the new found dissonance. How will the possibly react to each other?
- As they quietly sit at the table together, suspense fills the room as tension raises to new heights, what will the girl do, will she seek revenge?

This clip, through its use of silence and no dialogue allows for an interesting take on how the character my be perceived and how that may develop. The clip could easily be used as a part of my experiment although I feel that having two characters in the frame of such a short clip may make the theme seem less pointed towards one character and the state of their mind. The music could easily be manipulated to reinforce the tensions of the scene and the above stories but the music needs to focus in on the depth of the one main character and elevate the audience to think the way that character is thinking, not just to describe the atmosphere of the scene and tell us a story of how the characters got to where they are now.

I am still watching films, this clip could be used as an example for my project but don't believe it to be the most suitable of fits due to the reasons stated above.
